Aux origines d’un geste libre
- Auteur d’oeuvres abstraites depuis 1922 alors qu’il n’est qu’un jeune lycéen de 18 ans, Hartung ne s’engage véritablement dans la voie non figurative qu’à partir de 1931. Avant la guerre, en Espagne, en Allemagne et à Paris, il développe une gestualité extrêmement libre et audacieuse, voire un certain automatisme, mais travaille aussi à ressaisir cette gestualité dans des toiles peintes où il reporte consciencieusement les motifs souvent proches de l’informe — saccades de traits, taches ou écheveaux… — apparus sur le papier. Il n’est ni froidement géométrique, ni en recherche d’une vérité inconsciente, encore moins en quête de symbole ou de séduction visuelle : il cherche obstinément la crudité d’une trace, d’un signe éminemment personnels.Hartung had already started to create abstract works in 1922 when he was only 18 years old and still in high school, but it was not until 1931 that he truly adopted a nonfigurative approach. It was in pre-war Spain, Germany and Paris that he developed an extremely free and audacious gestural style that already displayed characteristics of automatism. During this period, he also worked on recreating this gesturality in his canvas paintings through the conscientious transfer of quasi informe, or formless, motifs – series of rapid brushstrokes, stains (taches), or skeins – that he had spontaneously created on paper beforehand. Hartung’s work is not coldly geometric, nor is it searching for an unconscious truth, symbols or visual allure. Instead, the artist is resolute in his pursuit of a raw, deeply personal mark or sign.
