Le motif de la mère à l’enfant obsède Moore qui réalise, tout au long de sa carrière, plusieurs centaines de versions en dessins et en sculptures, des plus naturalistes aux plus abstraites. L’artiste considère ce thème comme le sujet le plus universel et certainement le plus ancien de l’Histoire de l’art. Si la plupart des représentations suggèrent « une relation protectrice entre une grande forme et une plus petite », Moore aborde aussi l’aspect plus animal de cette relation mère/enfant, notamment quand l’instinct de survie du nouveau-né le pousse littéralement à vouloir tenter « de dévorer sa mère ». La naissance de sa fille unique Mary en 1946 va sensiblement contribuer à renouveler ce thème fondateur.

Mother and Child

Moore called the mother and child motif one of his obsessions, and throughout his career he made several hundred versions in drawing and sculpture, ranging from the most naturalistic to the most abstract. The artist considered this theme to be the most universal and probably the oldest subject in the history of art. Although most of the representations “have this idea of the larger form in a protective relationship with the smaller form”, he also addressed the more animal aspect of the mother-child relationship, especially when the survival instinct of the new born pushes it to literally try and “devour its mother”. The birth of his only child Mary in 1946 significantly contributed to the return to this central theme.
